OUR METHOD

How we update gold and silver prices

Where our rates come from, how we turn them into per-tola and per-gram prices, and how often they change. No hidden steps, so you can judge how much to rely on them.

THE PROCESS

Five steps from market to your screen

1. We read the market rate. For Pakistan we take the 24K gold rate per tola and the fine silver rate per tola from the local sarafa (bullion) market. [Name the exact source you check.]

2. We work out the other prices. Karats, purities and units are calculated from those base rates using fixed formulas (shown below).

3. We double-check. We compare the result with another source and check the arithmetic before anything goes live.

4. We publish with a date. Every rate shows “Rates as of” and the date it was captured, so you can see how fresh it is.

5. We correct mistakes. If a rate is wrong, we fix it, and note the date of the change.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

What moves prices, and how we calculate ours

What moves the price in Pakistan

  • International prices. Gold and silver are priced worldwide in US dollars per ounce.
  • The dollar-rupee rate. The USD to PKR exchange rate turns the world price into rupees.
  • Local demand and supply. Dealer premiums and buying interest can add to, or take from, the converted price.
  • Time of day. Rates can change several times in a day, so a rate is only right for the moment it was captured.

Why other websites may show a different number

  • Sites capture rates at different times of the day.
  • Some use a different market source or benchmark.
  • Some add a dealer premium, and some round differently.
  • Small gaps are normal. Always confirm the final price with your jeweller.

The formulas we use

22K gold, per tola24K rate x 22/24451,550 x 22/24 = Rs 413,921
21K gold, per tola24K rate x 21/24Rs 395,106
18K gold, per tola24K rate x 18/24Rs 338,663
Per gramPer-tola price / 11.6638451,550 / 11.6638 = Rs 38,714
Per mashaPer-tola price / 12451,550 / 12 = Rs 37,629
Sterling silver (925), per tolaFine silver rate x 0.9257,169 x 0.925 = Rs 6,631
Silver, per gramPer-tola price / 11.66387,169 / 11.6638 = Rs 615

1 tola = 11.6638 grams = 12 masha. Figures are rounded to the nearest rupee. Prices show the metal only; jewellery adds making charges.

Our Pakistan gold and silver rates follow the local sarafa (bullion) market. We start with the 24K gold rate per tola and the fine silver rate per tola, then calculate everything else from them.

We multiply the 24K rate by the karat divided by 24. For example, 22K = 24K x 22/24. For sterling silver (925), we multiply the fine silver rate by 0.925. The full table of formulas is on this page.

Your jeweller’s price can differ for a few reasons: the time of day, a dealer premium, and making charges added for jewellery. Our rates are for the metal only, so always confirm the final price with the seller.

Please tell us through our Contact page. We check the report against the market, correct the page if we agree, and note the date of the change.
