GUIDE 1 · UNITS

Gold units in Pakistan: tola, masha, ratti and grams

Pakistani jewellers quote gold in tola, while international markets use grams and troy ounces. Knowing how they relate lets you compare any two quotes fairly.

A tola is 11.6638 grams and is divided into 12 masha. Each masha is divided into 8 ratti. Small pieces such as rings and earrings are often weighed in masha and ratti, so it helps to be able to convert them.

Quick examples: 5 tola = 58.319 g. 50 g = 4.287 tola. 1 troy ounce = 2.667 tola.

1 tola11.6638 g1

GUIDE 2 · KARAT

Gold karats explained: 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K

Karat tells you how much of a piece is pure gold. Pure gold is 24 parts out of 24, so 22K means 22 parts gold and 2 parts other metals such as copper or silver.

Higher karat means more gold, a richer yellow colour, a softer metal and a higher price per gram. Lower karat means a harder alloy that holds up better to daily wear and stone setting.

Because karat is a simple fraction, you can price any karat from the 24K rate: multiply by the karat and divide by 24.

KARATPURITYCOMMON USE
24K99.9%Bars, coins, investment
22K91.6%Traditional jewellery
21K87.5%Everyday jewellery
18K75.0%Fashion and stone-set pieces
GUIDE 3 · JEWELLERY PRICE

How to calculate the price of gold jewellery

A jewellery bill is more than the price of gold. Most shops build it from the same parts:

Price = gold value + making charges + wastage + stones or extras

Gold value is the weight of the piece multiplied by that day’s rate for its karat. Making charges pay for the craftsmanship and are usually quoted per tola, per gram or as a percentage. Wastage is a small allowance some jewellers add for metal lost while making the piece. Stones and extras such as diamonds or pearls are priced separately.

Ask for each part to be written on the bill separately. That is the only way to compare two shops fairly.

WORKED EXAMPLE · 1 TOLA OF 22K JEWELLERY
Gold weight1 tola (11.6638 g)
22K rate on 19 Sep 2026Rs 413,921 per tola
Gold valueRs 413,921
Making charges (example only)Rs 10,000
Estimated totalRs 423,921

Making charges here are an illustration, not a quote. Every jeweller sets their own, so always ask.

GUIDE 4 · ZAKAT

Zakat on gold: the basics

Zakat is due on gold that reaches the nisab and has been owned for one lunar year. Many scholars, including in the Hanafi school followed by most Pakistanis, put the gold nisab at 7.5 tola (about 87.48 g). Some use 85 g. The rate is 2.5% of the gold’s current market value.

Scholars also differ on whether jewellery worn for personal use is zakatable. The Hanafi view is that it is. Ask a qualified scholar which view applies to you.

Zakat = value of your zakatable gold x 2.5%

This is general information, not a religious ruling.

GUIDE 5 · BUYING

Gold buying checklist

Use this list before you hand over any money, whether you are buying a bar, a coin or a wedding set.

Before you pay

  1. Check today’s rate for the karat you want before you enter the shop.
  2. Confirm the karat and ask how the seller verifies it.
  3. Watch it being weighed and note the weight in grams or tola.
  4. Ask for making charges and wastage as separate lines.
  5. Compare two shops using the same formula, not just the final price.
  6. Get an itemised receipt showing weight, karat, rate and charges.
  7. Ask about buyback and exchange terms before you buy.

Warning signs

  • One lump-sum price with no breakdown.
  • A rate that is far from today’s published rate, with no explanation.
  • Refusal to weigh the piece in front of you.
  • No written receipt, or a receipt without weight and karat.
  • Pressure to decide immediately.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Gold tools and guides: your questions answered

A tola is a traditional South Asian unit of weight. One tola equals 11.6638 grams, and it is divided into 12 masha. Gold is still quoted per tola in Pakistan, while global markets use grams and troy ounces.

Multiply the 24K rate by 22 and divide by 24. For example, if 24K gold is Rs 451,550 per tola, 22K gold is Rs 451,550 x 22/24 = Rs 413,921 per tola. The same method works for 21K and 18K.

Making charges pay for the labour and skill of turning gold into jewellery. Jewellers quote them per tola, per gram or as a percentage of the gold value. They vary by shop and by design, so ask for them as a separate line on the bill.

Many scholars, including in the Hanafi school, use 7.5 tola (about 87.48 g) as the nisab for gold. Some use 85 g. Zakat is 2.5% of the gold’s value once you have owned it for a lunar year. Please ask a qualified scholar which view applies to you.

It depends on how you will use it. 22K has the richest colour and is the traditional choice for Pakistani jewellery. 21K and 18K are harder, so they suit everyday wear and stone-set pieces. 24K is best for bars and coins.

Our Pakistan gold rate page shows 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K prices per tola and per gram for major cities, with the date each rate was captured.
